Jakarta – Political observers from Padjadjaran University, Yusa Djuyandi argue, embracing political opponents is a good and necessary thing. The reason, in the democratic political system of Indonesia is actually not known as the party supporting the government or pure opposition.
“If Gerindra and other Prabowo bearers, such as PKS, Democrats, and PAN can make a positive contribution to the government, Jokowi could ask Prabowo and his coalition to give their best cadres. That is of course if they are willing to enter. But the effort to collaborate with Prabowo and his coalition party needs to be based on a good political communication process, which is not just a matter of sharing power so that the government (executive) is strong, but so that this nation is strong, “Yusa told SP, in Jakarta, Sunday (9 / 6/2019).
Regarding concerns about a number of parties if all were in the government and there would be no balancer capable of giving control to the government, Yusa said that even supporting parties in the government could provide control.
Yusa gave an example, when PKS and PAN were during the administration of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY).
“These two parties can still be critical even if they support SBY at the time,” he said.
Yusa said that the political parties that are most likely to shift and join executives are PAN and Democrats.
This condition, he said, could be based on idealistic or opportunistic reasons. Idealist if the party really wants to make a positive contribution by putting their best professional cadres in the cabinet, opportunists if the party then only asks for ministerial reciprocity from the support they provide and cadres who occupy incompetent ministerial positions.
“But what we also cannot breathe is the joining of PAN and Democrats will also be related to their existence in the 2024 Election political map. The joining of PAN and Democrats to the government will provide considerable political and economic modalities in facing the 2024 election. There is no reason so strong from these two parties to remain in the Prabowo coalition or just be an observer in parliament. We can see this from the 2014-2019 political map, “he said.
For Gerindra and PKS, explained Yusa, it is a party that is more consistent in establishing itself as a supervisor of the government, like PDIP when SBY becomes president.
Actually even though pure opposition is unknown in the political system, he continued, but the state still needs parties that are outside the government (executive), because this will strengthen checks and balances.
“Although Gerindra and PKS are still likely to be tempted, the opportunity is not too big. Gerindra and PKS will have better political profits and capital for 2024 if they become critical opposition. But being in government is also not a bad thing, provided they can be idealistic in guarding government policies from within, “he said.
If all are embraced, continued Yusa, then there will be no opposition.
“The fear is that there are no checks and balances . Finally all the draft policies proposed by the executive have no criticisms, in this position it will be dangerous for democracy and for the people. We need opposition, but not pure opposition that must always oppose government policy. It could be then the non-government party gives support to the government for the proposed policy draft, “he said.
